The period between the early 19th century and the end of the Civil War consolidated and institutionalised pivotal processes in the construction of the United States as a nation and an empire. Continental expansion and its maritime projection, first towards the Atlantic and then towards the Pacific, embody the Manifest Destiny that would eventually articulate in explicit terms the providentialist components already present at the founding of the Republic. An imperial construction process, the subject of a fascinating historiographical debate, which in no way proceeds independently of the Eurocentrism of the international system.
