This article examines Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) against the backdrop of the debate on the problematic convergence of his liberal and conservative principles. This debate is addressed through the continuity of Burke’s theoretical and political positions, as they are expressed in the following question: How can a revolution properly crystallize into a constitution? Drawing on Burke’s comparison between the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and the French Revolution of 1789, the article seeks to answer this question by elucidating Burke’s account of the accumulation and inheritance of constitutional knowledge across generations, as opposed to the abstract rationalism of revolutionary thought, which constantly seeks to begin anew. Emphasis shall be put therefore on concepts such as certainty, prudence, and experience. Through this analysis, the article aims to identify, prior to its strictly doctrinal tenets, some of the principal methodological features of Burke’s liberalism.
