The impeachment against Warren Hastings was Edmund Burke’s longest and most costly parliamentary endeavor. Although, in the short term, it was his most resounding failure, he considered it his definitive legacy, which he was not wrong, since, in the medium and long term, it has been very influential. In it, Burke put his rhetorical-deliberative and aesthetic-sublime wisdom, accumulated over the years, at the service of a political system based on counter-powers and the legislative dominance of the House of Commons, as an elected body, as well as at the service of limiting, from universal human rights, the imperialist drive. In the rhetorical construction of this synthesis of his thought and work, Burke followed the successful model of Cicero’s Verrines, and there is, therefore, a historical line that connects Cicero with Burke and both with contemporary anti-imperialism.
