This study aims to demonstrate that, within the context of contemporary art, there are participatory artworks that have included people living with mental health conditions, as well as works of outsider art that exhibit characteristics of participatory art. Starting with the terms ‘contemporary art’, ‘participatory art’, and ‘outsider art’, and considering the documentary re-search methodology proposed by Lucía Vivero Correa and Blanca Isabel Sánchez Cruz, this exploration leads us to understand the broad spectrum encompassed by participatory art. It concludes that outsider art, from its inception, established that the works associated with it were created for personal consumption, which hinderedits integration of features from other artistic fields, such as participatory art.
