the Artemis Accords, promoted and led by NASA, have as their primary objective facilitating the return of human beings to the Moon and, at a later stage, fostering their arrival on Mars. This instrument embodies a «political commitment» whereby, while reinforcing the idea that space activities should be oriented towards peaceful purposes and conducted in conformity with international law, it also advocates the commercialization of the outer space environment. This reflects a significant shift in the orientation of space activities, insofar as the Accords openly favour the exploitation of the resources existing in that domain. In this context, mining activities appear to be emerging as a decisive factor in shaping the future configuration of the mentioned environment. Indeed, the Artemis Accords expressly refer to such extractive activities, which today already constitute a strategic objective for both States and companies seeking to capitalize on emerging opportunities. Consequently, this instrument –adopted in 2020– has managed to identify and address, albeit in a controversial manner, the competition that will, sooner or later, arise around access to, control over, and utilization of outer space. In any event, these Accords are already permeating the renewed space race of the twenty-first century, introducing contentious elements –such as safety zones– that, over time, will generate geopolitical tensions and frictions that will, with all certainty, impact global stability.
