The increase in the minimum wage in recent years has been widespread in European Union countries and has led to a clear improvement in the purchasing power of low-wage workers. Our work aims to analyse recent developments in the minimum wage and its adequacy in relation to European directive, as well as its effects on the labour market, particularly on wage inequality and in-work poverty. To this end, we focus on analysing minimum wages in the European context in order to examine the Spanish case in greater detail, taking into account its relationship with the average wage and the weight that minimum wage earners have on the total wage-earning population. The results obtained allow us to affirm, on the one hand, that the minimum wage level in Spain is in line with the European directive and close to the target set in the European Social Charter. On the other hand, there has been a reduction in wage inequality and in the percentage of working poor, especially among those groups that benefit most from the minimum wage.
