Este artículo analiza la evolución de las democracias contemporáneas, tras la irrupción y expansión de las opciones populistas y sus estrategias polarizadoras. El incremento de este tipo de opciones, incluso entre partidos tradicionalmente calificados como tradicionales o mainstream, erosiona las actitudes democráticas ciudadanas, progresivamente dispuestas a dejar de lado los principios y prácticas democráticas. Las democracias, en todo caso, se manifiestan más resilientes que lo que los augurios sobre su muerte sugerirían, abriéndose opciones para su evolución y resistencia. Se apuntan diversas estrategias que los sistemas políticos están adoptando para afrontar esos retos y prolongar las expectativas y promesas de los sistemas democráticos liberales, que siguen sin resolver parte de los problemas representativos y participativos que afloraron ya en los años setenta…
This article analyzes the evolution of contemporary democracies following the emergence and expansión of populist options, and their polarizing strategies. The rise of such options, even among parties traditionally classified as mainstream, erodes democratic attitudes among citizens, who are increasingly ready to set aside democratic principles and practices (regarding ‘the others’). Democracies, in any case, are proving more resilient than predictions of their demise would suggest, opening up options for their evolution and resistance. Various strategies are outlined that political systems are adopting to address these challenges and prolong the expectations and promises of liberal democratic systems, which —on the other hand— remain unable to resolve some of the representative and participatory problems that emerged already in the 1970s…
