A pesar de los intentos de ambos prelados por transitar entre la negociación y la resistencia pacífica, sus posturas y acciones estuvieron sujetas a un contexto complejo, y fueron criticadas por algunos sectores del clero, así como por miembros de la Liga Nacional Defensora de la Libertad Religiosa. Este estudio propone una relectura de su papel más allá de la coyuntura inmediata de “los arreglos”, al examinar las modalidades de su actuación en la construcción de un acuerdo de paz y tomando en cuenta la fragilidad de la relación Estado-Iglesia en la primera mitad del siglo XX.
The article presents and analyzes the different roles played by bishops Leopoldo Ruiz y Flores and Pascual Díaz Barreto, as opponents, builders, dissenters, and persecuted figures during the Mexican religious conflict known as the Cristero War. Despite both prelates’ attempts to navigate between negotiation and peaceful resistance, their positions and actions were subject to a complex context and were criticized by some sectors of the clergy, as well as by members of the National League for the Defense of Religious Liberty. This study proposes a rereading of their role beyond the immediate context of the “arrangements”, examining the ways in which they contributed to the construction of a peace agreement while taking into account the fragility of Church–State relations in the first half of the twentieth century.
