El presente artículo aborda una cuestión escasamente tratada por la literatura académica referida a América Latina: el caso de la seguridad privada. En ese sentido, inicialmente se establecen los alcances y límites del mencionado concepto, y se describen sus aspectos distintivos, que marcan la diferencia con las empresas militares privadas. Luego, se identifican los diferentes factores que impulsaron el crecimiento de esta actividad en la región, hasta el día de hoy, y la interpretación estatal sobre esta novedosa situación. Además, el artículo analiza la persistente informalidad que afecta a buena parte del sector, y algunos efectos concretos de esa irregularidad. El trabajo propone cifras actualizadas sobre las dimensiones actuales de la esfera formal de este rubro, en términos de cantidad de personal, que dejan sin efecto estimaciones elaboradas en la década pasada por diferentes organismos internacionales. Finalmente, se exploran posibilidades de cooperación entre las empresas de seguridad privada y las instituciones encargadas de la seguridad pública
This article addresses a topic that has been scarcely studied in the academic literature on Latin America: the case of private security. In this regard, it initially establishes the scope and limits of the concept and describes its distinctive aspects, which mark its difference from private military companies. It then identifies the various factors that have driven the growth of this activity in the region to this day, as well as the state's interpretation of this novel situation. Furthermore, the article analyzes the persistent informality affecting a large part of the sector and some specific effects of this irregularity. The paper proposes updated figures on the current dimensions of the formal sphere of this sector, in terms of personnel numbers, which nullify estimates developed in the past decade by various international organizations. Finally, it explores possibilities for cooperation between private security companies and the institutions responsible for public security.
