Peter Tuor (1876–1957), professor of Roman law at the University of Bern, combined a deep mastery of Roman legal tradition with a systematic approach to Swiss private law, culminating in his celebrated Commentary on Inheritance Law and his widely used textbook on the Swiss Civil Code. Beyond Roman law, Tuor can be considered as a pioneer of legal linguistics. Born in the trilingual canton of Grau-bünden, he embodied also Switzerland’s linguistic and cultural diversity and translated both the Swiss Civil Code and Penal Code into Romansh.
