La magnitud de la experiencia del monarca Carlos III y de su equipo ministerial ilustrado de trasladar, desde tierras europeas, a un grupo de hombres, mujeres y niños a los parajes de Sierra Morena y Baja Andalucía, fue todo en reto económico, social y administrativo. La participación de ilustres personajes en el proyecto y ejecución de aquel ensayo de repoblar las zonas despobladas del territorio español, como Pablo de Olavide y Jáuregui, Miguel Múzquiz y Pedro Rodríguez Campomanes, contribuyeron al éxito de la empresa. El superintendente Pablo de Olavide fue el auténtico gestor de esta empresa, financiada por el Estado, contratando con el coronel bávaro J. Gaspar von Thürriegel la recluta de unos seis mil colonos centro europeos útiles para poblar las comarcas deshabitadas, dedicados a la agricultura, ganadería e industria artesanal. La documentación recogida por el geógrafo real Tomás López permite comprobar cómo, con el paso del tiempo, muchos de los objetivos de Olavide se habían cumplido.
The magnitude of the experience of King Charles III and his enlightened ministerial team in transporting a group of men, women, and children from European lands to the Sierra Morena and Baja Andalucía was all in the form of an economic, social, and administrative challenge.
The participation of illustrious figures in the project and execution of this attempt to repopulate the depopulated areas of Spanish territory, such as Pablo de Olavide y Jáuregui, Miguel Múzquiz, and Pedro Rodríguez Campomanes, contributed to the success of the undertaking. Superintendent Pablo de Olavide was the true manager of this state-financed enterprise, contracting with the Bavarian colonel J. Gaspar von Thürriegel to recruit some six thousand Central European settlers suitable for populating the uninhabited regions, dedicated to agriculture, livestock, and the artisanal industry.
The documentation collected by the royal geographer Tomás López shows how, over time, many of Olavide’s objectives had been met.
