Este artículo analiza la etapa final de Pablo de Olavide, desde la sentencia inquisitorial de 1778 hasta su muerte en 1803, examinando su destierro, exilio en la Francia revolucionaria y su retorno bajo perdón real. Se estudian sus transformaciones políticas y religiosas, su obra El evangelio en triunfo y su legado como ilustrado. Se muestra cómo su vida refleja las tensiones entre Ilustración, fe y poder en la España de finales del siglo XVIII, y cómo su figura se convirtió en símbolo de las posibilidades y límites de la reforma ilustrada.
This article analyzes the final stage of Pablo de Olavide’s life, from the Inquisition’s sentence in 1778 to his death in 1803, examining his banishment, exile in revolutionary France, and his return under royal pardon. It explores his political and religious transformations, his work El evangelio en triunfo, and his legacy as an enlightened reformer. The article shows how Olavide’s life reflects the tensions between Enlightenment, faith, and power in late eighteenth-century Spain, and how his figure became a symbol of the possibilities and limits of enlightened reform within a society facing the challenges of modernization.
