Durante el llamado procés catalán, se insistía desde los partidos independentistas en reclamar la celebración de un referéndum, pactado o unilateral, para preguntar a la ciudadanía por su intención con relación a la posibilidad de que Cataluña se convirtiera en un Estado propio. El derecho de autodeterminación era el punto clave de esas reivindicaciones que desembocaron en la celebración del referéndum inconstitucional del 1 de octubre de 2017. Hoy, al hilo de la cuestión sobre el cambio del sistema de financiación catalana y dadas las circunstancias de la política catalana y española, los partidos independentistas vuelven a poner en el centro del debate político el tema del referéndum y del derecho de autodeterminación.
During the so-called catalán procés, pro-independence parties in-sisted on demanding the holding of a referéndum, either agreed or unilateral , to ask citizens about their intention regarding the possibility of Catalonia becoming a state of its own. The right to self-determination was the key point of those claims that led to the holding of the unconstitutional referéndum of Octobre 1, 2017. Today, in the wake of the question on the change of the Catalan financing system and given the circumstances of Catalana n Spanish politics, some pro-in-dependence parties are once again putting the issue of the referéndum and the right to self-determination at the center of the political debate
