The educational context was one of the first areas in which mediation was incorporated in Spain. Despite the lack of legal regulation, the benefits of the objectives and the process itself encouraged classrooms to be considered a suitable environment for its implementation. The use of mediation in education not only helps to improve and manage conflicts in favour of coexistence in the classroom but also has an important educational aspect in terms of democratic values and skills. Among the educational tools that can be used to teach democratic coexistence, mediation has proven to be an interesting resource insofar as it aims to replace the culture of confrontation and litigation with consensus, and its objectives are the exercise of tolerance and freedom, within the democratic principles of coexistence, as well as the prevention and peaceful resolution of conflicts. But also, because, in addition to contributing to direct transmission, it constitutes an invaluable opportunity to promote, in practice and effectively, the teaching of civic and democratic values through the participation of the students themselves.
