Este estudio analiza cómo los ciclos mineros influenciaron la evolución demográfica de distintos municipios o distritos mineros españoles entre el siglo XIX y el siglo XX, destacando la importancia de factores económicos, geográficos e institucionales. Se observa que la dependencia minera determinó diferentes trayectorias poblacionales, desde enclaves altamente dependientes que sufrieron despoblación tras el cierre de las minas, hasta áreas semiurbanas con economías diversificadas que lograron mitigar el impacto del declive minero. Los casos de estudio ilustran esta diversidad de respuestas demográficas, subrayando la necesidad de enfoques territoriales inferiores a la escala provincial para comprender plenamente las dinámicas poblacionales derivadas del declive minero en España.
This study examines the impact of mining cycles on the demographic evolution of various Spanish municipalities or mining districts between the 19th and 20th centuries. It emphasises the significance of economic, geographical and institutional factors in this process. The study demonstrates that the degree of mining dependence shaped the demographic trajectory of municipalities, from those that were highly dependent and experienced depopulation following the closure of mines, to semi-urban areas with diversified economies that were better equipped to withstand the impact of mining decline. The case studies illustrate this diversity of demographic responses, emphasizing the necessity for territorial approaches at a more granular level than the provincial scale to fully comprehend the population dynamics of mining decline in Spain.
