El derecho de resistencia frente a la tiranía ocupará un papel central en el debate político de la Europa moderna, aunque en esta discusión está en lid algo más que la mera justificación o no del tiranicidio. Se trata, en efecto, del campo de batalla intelectual en el que confrontarán las tradicionales concepciones cristianas con la creciente noción de la razón de Estado. El más célebre escrito de Juan de Mariana, De rege et regis institutione (1599), no es un tratado más sobre el tiranicidio, sino que participa de esta contraposición de modelos políticos, motivo por el que despertó tanta repercusión en las demás monarquías europeas. El presente artículo pretende situar la obra del padre Mariana en el contexto de las transformaciones políticas de la Europa del XVII
The right to resist tyranny will play a central role in the political debates of Modern Europe, although this discussion is not limited to the justification or condemnation of tyrannicide. It will, in fact, become the intellectual battleground where traditional Christian conceptions confront the rising notion of the raison d’État. Juan de Mariana’s most famous work, De rege et regis institutione (1599), is not simply another treatise on tyrannicide; rather, it engages with the contrast between these two political models, which is why it had such a profound impact on other European monarchies.
