Se analizan las acciones del Estado chileno en la conformación de suburbios a través de políticas habitacionales, tomando como caso de estudio el sector Escuadrón de la ciudad de Coronel. La promesa estatal por bienestar mediante el acceso a vivienda influye en la producción y percepción de estos espacios suburbanos. Se discuten visiones sobre el suburbio, la acción estatal habitacional y la noción de bienestar residencial. A partir de la realización de un trabajo de campo, además del procesamiento de imágenes satelitales para identificar usos de suelo, se constata un ensamblaje entre los nuevos conjuntos subsidiados, plantaciones forestales y cuerpos de agua que configura un “lindo suburbio” vinculado a ideales de bienestar. Se tensiona esta representación al evidenciar los riesgos naturales en su entorno. En síntesis, el ente público tiene un rol central en la producción de suburbios en las políticas habitacionales, transformando con ello la percepción de bienestar de sus residentes.
The actions of the Chilean State in the conformation of suburbs through housing policies are analyzed, taking the Escuadrón sector of the city of Coronel as a case study. The state’s promise of well-being through access to housing influences the production and perception of these suburban spaces. Visions of the suburb, state housing action and the notion of residential well-being are discussed. From the field work, in addition to the processing of satellite images to identify land uses, an assemblage between the new subsi-dized complexes, forest plantations and bodies of water that configures a “beautiful suburb” linked to ideals of well-being is confirmed. This representation is stressed by highlighting the natural risks in its environment. In short, the public entity plays a central role in the production of suburbs in housing policies, thus transforming the perception of well-being of its residents
