El proceso de fortalecimiento democrático en América Latina ha impulsado el surgimiento de instituciones y mecanismos que fomentan la transparencia y la participación ciudadana. Este artículo se centra en una de esas iniciativas al evaluar el funcionamiento del Mecanismo de Rendición de Cuentas en Ecuador entre 2010 y 2023. Los resultados indican que a pesar de que existe la presentación de informes, el cumplimiento ha sido principalmente formal y no sustantivo, persisten deficiencias como la falta de sanciones, baja calidad de la información, escasa participación ciudadana, y deficiente participación del sector privado. Aunque se reconoce avances, que introduce criterios de verificación más rigurosos, el MRC sigue operando como un trámite simbólico. La investigación se basa en entrevistas, documentos oficiales y un enfoque teórico principal-agente, destacando la necesidad de una institucionalidad más robusta y una ciudadanía activa
The process of democratic strengthening in Latin America has driven the emergence of institutions and mechanisms that promote transparency and citizen participation. This article focuses on one such initiative by evaluating the performance of the Accountability Mechanism in Ecuador between 2010 and 2023. The findings indicate that, despite the submission of reports, compliance has been mostly formal rather than substantive. Deficiencies persist, such as the lack of sanctions, low quality of information, limited citizen participation, and poor involvement of the private sector. Although some progress is recognized, including the introduction of stricter verification criteria, the mechanism continues to operate as a symbolic procedure. The research is based on interviews, official documents, and a principal-agent theoretical framework, highlighting the need for stronger institutions and more active civic engagement
