Germany is proud of its culture of memory. No other nation has confronted its own past as much as the Germans. This text presents two important moments in the current debate on the culture of memory and two key points, namely the theory of singularity and the difference between anti-Semitism and racism. With their central theses they are directly related to poscolonial studies, which claim that the culture of memory in Germany only refers to the crimes of the Nazi-Germany, but not to its own colonial history. The aim of this text is to familiarise the Latin American reader with this debate and to convey a better understanding of history by presenting the key elements for understanding it.
