In 2023, the Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of the United States went on strike in the face of the unstoppable expansion of Artificial Intelligence in audiovisual production. One of their main concerns was the digital replicas and “resurrections” of deceased actors, the so-called “digital necromancy” or “necrofilmia.” The objective of this research is to understand how the expansion of the uses of Artificial Intelligence is radically changing the film industry, bringing with it corresponding artistic, productive, and legal changes. And, specifically, how these changes affect the corporeality of the work of actors and actresses who are being replaced by digital avatars. To this end, we propose an aesthetic—not a technological—approach to what these new tools mean both for language and the audiovisual industry, and for their performers. It is concluded that this paradigm shift has already begun some time ago and that its consequences for actors and actresses are profound, becoming an unstoppable trend: The unpredictable (in aesthetic and artistic results), inevitable (in productive terms), problematic (in its ethical and legal implications) and incalculable (in business potential) normalization of the use of Artificial Intelligence in cinematographic creative flows
En 2023 el sindicato actoral y el sindicato de guionistas de Estados Unidos se declararon en huelga ante la imparable expansión de la Inteligencia Artificial en la producción audiovisual. Una de sus preocupaciones principales eran las réplicas digitales y las “resurrecciones” de actores fallecidos, la llamada “necromancia digital” o “necrofilmia”. El objetivo de esta investigación es comprender cómo la expansión de los usos de la Inteligencia Artificial está modificando radicalmente la industria cinematográfica, trayendo consigo sus correspondientes cambios artísticos, productivos y legales. Y, en concreto, cómo estos cambios afectan a la corporalidad del trabajo de los actores y actrices que se están viendo sustituidos por avatares digitales. Para ello, se plantea un acercamiento estético —que no tecnológico— tanto a lo que estas nuevas herramientas suponen para el lenguaje y la industria audiovisual como para sus intérpretes. Se concluye que este cambio de paradigma hace ya tiempo ha comenzado y que sus consecuencias para los actores y actrices son profundas, convirtiéndose en una tendencia imparable: La imprevisible (en resultados estéticos y artísticos), inevitable (en términos productivos), problemática (en sus implicaciones éticas y legales) e incalculable (en potencial de negocio) normalización del uso de la Inteligencia Artificial en los flujos creativos cinematográficos.
