La primera parte del siglo XX chileno fue un período de crisis social y política, así como de profundas transformaciones históricas. En educación hubo debates, surgieron nuevas concepciones y cambios en el sistema educativo. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar una exposición comprensiva del sentido de las concepciones de la educación como apostolado de Gabriela Mistral y de la educación civilizadora de Darío Salas. Ambas se basaron en diversas tradiciones culturales y por ellos son diferentes, aunque convergentes en algunos aspectos, y contribuyeron al proceso de renovación social y de democratización de la educación nacional. El método de análisis es de carácter hermenéutico. Se busca comprender estas concepciones en el contexto social e intelectual de su tiempo.
The first part of the Chilean twentieth century was a period of social and political crisis, as well as of profound historical transformations. In education there were debates, new conceptions and changes in the educational system. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive exposition of the meaning of Gabriela Mistral's conception of education as an apostolate and of Darío Salas' notion of civilizing education. Both of them were based on diverse cultural traditions and therefore are different although convergent in some aspects, and contributed to the process of social renovation and democratization of national education. The method of analysis is hermeneutic. The aim is to understand these conceptions in the social and intellectual context of their time.
