A finales de abril de 1827 tuvo lugar un incidente entre el Dey Hussein y el cónsul de Francia en Argel, Pierre Deval. El diplomático francés fue golpeado. Este hecho, le coup d´éventail, ha sido reconstruido por decenas de autores hasta la fecha. Llama la atención, sin embargo, la diversidad de versiones existentes sobre una acción en principio poco susceptible de ser interpretada. El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar las razones de esta variedad e intentar entender qué ocurrió en realidad. Para ello se revisarán las fuentes bibliográficas y de primera mano, y se realizará una aproximación al relato desde su contexto histórico.
At the end of April 1827 an incident occurred between the Dey Hussein and the French Consul in Argel, Pierre Deval. The French diplomat was beaten. This event, le coup d´eventail, has been reconstructed by dozens of authors until today. It is remarkable, however, the diversity of existing versions of an action that is initially unlikely to be interpreted. The objective of this article is to analyze the reasons behind this variety and try to understand what happened in reality. To do this, the bibliographic and first hand sources will be reviewed, and an approach to the story from its historical context will be made.
