En la concepción del progreso de Herbert Spencer está vinculado a la idea de supervivencia de los más aptos y a la dialéctica existente en estatus y contrato en la edad moderna. Las nociones de estatus y contrato son utilizadas sistemáticamente en la sociología de Spencer en la forma de militarismo e industrialismo en confrontación de sistemas históricos. Spencer utiliza aquí las expresiones de Henry Maine, que la entendió como paradigma de cambio social en la dirección del progreso. Sin embargo, esa idea de progreso fue defendida por Maine y por Spencer, pero el transcurso del tiempo, la experiencia histórica, mostró lo ilusorio de identificar sin más evolución y progreso social.
In Herbert Spencer’s conception of progress is linked to the idea of survival of the fittest and the dialectic of status and contract in the modern age. The notions of status and contract are used systematically in Spencer’s sociology in the form of militarism and industrialism in confrontation of historical systems. Spencer here uses the expressions of Henry Maine, who understood it as a paradigm of social change in the direction of progress. However, this idea of progress was defended by Maine and by Spencer, but the course of time, historical experience, showed how illusory it is to identify evolution and social progress without further ado.
