In ancient Rome, female priestesses, like their male counterparts, were subject to strict religious regulations established by the Pontifical College and the viri sacris faciundis. Errors in rituals, inappropriate behaviour, or the transgression of certain taboos, which we will study, were considered religious offenses. Ritual offenses within the female priesthood in ancient Rome not only highlight the control over women in the religious sphere but also the intricate relationship between religion, law, and gender in this society.
