La innovación frugal se centra en el desarrollo de productos y servicios accesibles, a partir de materiales reutilizables, reciclables, reparables y de bajo costo. Aunque es un campo relativamente reciente, ha cobrado relevancia tanto en países de bajos ingresos, donde surgió, como en territorios de altos ingresos. Esta investigación realizó una revisión bibliométrica con el fin de analizar la evolución de la literatura sobre este tipo de innovación. Se utilizaron 475 artículos extraídos de la base de datos Web of Science, publicados entre 2011 y 2024. Con el apoyo del software VosViewer, se examinaron los autores más citados, las revistas más productivas, las palabras clave más frecuentes y las colaboraciones entre países y organizaciones. Asimismo, se identificaron relaciones entre las palabras clave y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), lo que permitió establecer una conexión entre la innovación frugal y los temas de sostenibilidad. Los resultados permiten ampliar la comprensión sobre los países que más investigan o implementan esta innovación, las temáticas más abordadas y los vínculos entre regiones. Los hallazgos también evidencian que, si bien este enfoque tiene alto potencial en el sur global, persisten barreras para su promoción, junto con una tendencia a la apropiación del concepto por parte de países desarrollados para mejorar sus propias condiciones tecnológicas.
Frugal innovation focuses on the development of accessible products and services using reusable, recyclable, repairable, and low-cost materials. Although it is a relatively recent field, it has gained relevance both in low-income countries, where it originated, and in high-income territories. This research carried out a bibliometric review to analyze the evolution of the literature on this type of innovation. A total of 475 articles were used, extracted from the Web of Science database and published between 2011 and 2024. With the support of VosViewer software, the most cited authors, the most productive journals, the most frequent keywords, and collaborations between countries and organizations were examined. Additionally, relationships between keywords and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were identified, allowing for a connection between frugal innovation and sustainability-related topics. The results contribute to a broader understanding of the countries most engaged in researching or implementing this type of innovation, the most frequently addressed topics, and the connections between regions. The findings also show that, although this approach has high potential in the Global South, there are still barriers that hinder its promotion, along with a trend toward the appropriation of this concept by developed countries to enhance their own technological conditions.
