El presente artículo busca contribuir a la comprensión de los modos en que, a fines del siglo XIX durante la formación del Estado-Nación argentino, la presentación estético-política del “desierto” como paisaje nacional operó y se re-configuró fotográficamente sobre Patagonia y Tierra del Fuego. Al respecto, se abordan dos series fotográficas: por un lado, el álbum de fotografías tomadas en 1879 por Antonio Pozzo como fotógrafo oficial de la “Conquista del Desierto” y por el otro, el álbum de fotografías del ingeniero rumano Julio Popper, tomadas en 1886 durante su exploración de las regiones septentrionales de Tierra del Fuego.
This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the ways in which, at the end of the 19th century during the formation of the Argentine Nation-State, the aesthetic-political presentation of the “desert” as a national landscape operated and was photographically reconfigured over Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Therefore two photographic series are addressed: on the one hand, the album of photographs taken in 1879 by Antonio Pozzo as official photographer of the “Conquest of the Desert” and, on the other, the album of photographs taken by Julio Popper in 1886, during his exploration of the northern regions of Tierra del Fuego.
