Exponemos cómo llegaron las primeras 14 pinturas al salón Nuevo del Alcázar, llamado más tarde de los Espejos, desde 1621, año de ascenso al trono de Felipe IV, hasta 1626, en que las vio Cassiano dal Pozzo, secretario del cardenal Francesco Barberini, y algunas más que se mencionaron en relación con el recinto en estos años. Aportamos novedades en cuanto a las autorías y asuntos de algunas, identificamos otras subsistentes o aclaramos las circunstancias de su realización. Finalmente discurrimos sobre el significado de las pinturas y si pudieron contener un mensaje dirigido a la embajada romana.
We will explain how the fi rst 14 paintings arrived at the New Hall of the Alcázar, later called the Hall of Mirrors, from 1621, the year of Philip IV’s accession to the throne, until 1626, when they were seen by Cassiano dal Pozzo, secretary of Cardinal Francesco Barberini, and some others that were mentioned in connection with the room in those years. We provide new information on the authorship and subject matter of some of them, identify other surviving ones and clarify the circumstances in which they were executed. Finally, we discuss the meaning of the paintings and if they may have contained a message addressed to the Roman embassy
