The scientific literature around the use of information systems in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), has allowed new and better decisions to be made based on the capacity to collect, analyze, process and publish data, which allows these institutions to be strengthened in terms of competitiveness;
however, there are no known review studies that account for the current state of development, so the objective is to identify the main research trends around the use of information systems in HEIs. For this, a bibliometric analysis is designed that follows the reference items of the PRISMA statement. The main findings allow us to understand that it is a topic with significant growth, based on emerging topics such as modeling, the quality of library information systems or systems, as well as other consolidated concepts such as user satisfaction and geographic information systems. It concludes on the importance of increasing current knowledge from, on the one hand, the main research references, and, on the other hand, the leading themes at present and the near future.
La literatura científica alrededor del uso de sistemas de información en Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES), ha permitido tomar nuevas y mejores decisiones a partir de la capacidad de recopilación, análisis, procesamiento y publicación de datos, lo que permite afianzar estas instituciones en términos de competitividad; sin embargo, no se conocen estudios de revisión que den cuenta del estado de desarrollo actual, por lo que se tiene como objetivo identificar las principales tendencias investigativas alrededor del uso de sistemas de información en IES. Para ello, se diseña un análisis bibliométrico que sigue los ítems de referencia de la declaración PRISMA. Los principales hallazgos permiten comprender que es una temática con un importante crecimiento, a partir de temáticas emergentes como el modelado, la calidad de los sistemas o sistemas de información bibliotecaria, así como de otros conceptos consolidados como satisfacción del usuario y sistemas de información geográfica. Se concluye sobre la importancia de incrementar el conocimiento actual a partir, por un lado, de los principales referentes de investigación, y, por otro lado, de las temáticas protagónicas en la actualidad y el futuro próximo
