Structured in an essayistic manner, the work examines the debate instituted in Critical Theory around the methodology of social sciences and the tension between traditional Theory and the proposal of Critical Theory. It proposes to compare the particularities of this debate in the work of Max Horkheimer and Jürgen Habermas, establishing their tangencies and convergences, mainly in the discourse on the role of the emancipatory structuring of critical theory in the methodology of social sciences. Emphasizing how in the work of both authors, the methodological guidance of critical theory promotes the emphasis on elucidating the truth in the process of political emancipation and social awareness that makes individuals and society approach freedom.
Estruturado de forma ensaística, o trabalho examina o debate instituído na Teoria crítica em torno da metodologia das ciências sociais e na tensão entre a Teoria tradicional e a proposta da Teoria crítica. Propõe comparar as particularidades deste debate na obra de Max Horkheimer e de Jürgen Habermas, estabelecendo suas tangências e convergências, principalmente no discurso sobre o papel da estruturação emancipatória da Teoria crítica na metodologia das ciências sociais. Enfatizando como no trabalho de ambos os autores o norteamento metodológico da Teoria crítica promove a ênfase da elucidação da verdade no processo de emancipação política e consciência social que faz com que os indivíduos e a sociedade se aproximem da liberdade.
